BOOK TRAILER

[ Original title, in portuguese: Sonata em Auschwitz ]

Sonata in Auschwitz, Luize Valente's third historical novel, comes after The Secret of the Shrine (2012) and A Square in Antwerp (2015), all published by Record / Brazil. At the end of 2017, the novel integrates VEJA magazine's list of best selling books in Brazil and maintains the position on the top at bookstores Travessa and Timbre. In January/February 2018, it reached the 2nd place of best selling fiction books in Portugal at Bertrand bookstore - the oldest in the world - and the 1st place of best selling Portuguese-language books at FNAC Portugal.

Historical research and field research mark the author's writing, this time with a story that unfolds at the Nazi extermination camp, a saga in the midst of the Holocaust involving the reader in mystery, suspense and deep feelings and sensations.

This novel is a fiction based on historical facts, real data and survivor testimonials. The author had a remarkable meeting with Maria Yefremov, a Jewish survivor, who passed away on december 2017, in Rio de Janeiro,  with 103 years old. Maria had a baby girl in Auschwitz in 1944 and never knew what happened to her - this fact was the main inspiration to start the fiction.

Another curiosity is that the Sonata that gives title to the novel took form while the book was being written. The author's nephew, the young maestro Antonio Simão, composed the Sonata for Haya having the same age as the character Friedrich, 24 years old. An interesting dialogue between fiction and reality.

And, as a surprise for the most attentive reader, there is a mysterious connection of this new novel with the previous one, A Square in Antwerp...

SYNOPSIS
A baby born in the Auschwitz-Birkenau tents in September 1944. A Sonata composed by a young German officer, on the same date, also in Auschwitz. Two stories that cross paths and complete each other. Decades later, Amalia, Portuguese daughter of a German father, starts to lift the veil that covers the Nazi past of the family from a musical score revealed by an unknown great-grandmother, signed by her grandfather Friedrich and entitled Für Haya (for Haya).

The question of whether her grandfather, considered deceased before the end of the Second World War, could be alive in Rio de Janeiro, leads her to cross the ocean and meet a Holocaust-surviving Jewish couple, Adele, and Enoch. The rise of Nazism in Berlin, the saga of the Hungarian Jews of Transylvania, the mysteries that occurred in the extermination camp in Poland and the post-war era in a house full of secrets in a Potsdam lake offer the paths that Amalia will travel to piece the puzzle together.
